Dumcrieff Estate and Tower were granted to the Murray Family by the Duke of Albany, son of King James II of Scotland in 1482. After the tower was attacked and destroyed by the Glendinning family in retaliation for a raid on their settlement in Westerkirk, a smaller version of the current house was built on the site around 1684.
The estate was purchased by the doyen of Scottish Enlightenment, Sir John Clerk in 1727 and his son George, improved the estate by planning and planting the parkland and woodland surrounding the house as well as extending the house.
The estate was then sold firstly to Alexander Farquarson and then to Colonel William Johnstone in 1783. Shortly afterwards, the house was rented for two years by John Loudon MacAdam, the famous pioneer of the road surfacing technique that still bears his name. The large sandstone roller used by MacAdam in perfecting his invention still sits in the grounds.
On the death of Colonel William Johnstone in 1792, the estate was sold to Robert Burns’s biographer Dr James Currie and was bought in 1806 by Dr John Rogerson - personal physician to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, for his retirement. Immediately following his purchase of Dumcrieff, Dr Rogerson commissioned and built the existing mansion house in the Classical style popularised by the Adam family at the time.
Dr Rogerson’s granddaughter Elizabeth inherited the estate and later married Lord Rollo. Following the First World War, the estate was bought by Rev. Adam Forman and remained in his possession for about fifty years until his death at the age of 103. The estate was sold by auction in the early seventies and then re-sold to another family a few years later, who lived on the estate for some 20 years.
The estate was sold privately to a local businessman in 2008.
Lovely clean house with everything you need for an easy and enjoyable stay.
Dumcrieff House is an excellent property near Moffat. It easily accommodated our party of seventeen from 3 generations. This was the second time many of our group had indeed visited Dumcrieff. It is very spacious with bedrooms and bathrooms of a high standard. Property grounds are great for walks and playing games with children. The property was very clean and conformed to a high standard with all Covid regulations. A well equipped and comfortable kitchen plus a large Dining Room allowed us to eat in comfort inside or barbecue externally. The large lounge with a log burner plus the snooker room and games room made it very sociable at night. We also used a local outdoor company for canoeing. We definitely hope to return. Philip and his wife are most accommodating though we required no assistance from them during our stay.
An amazing house in a beautiful location. The memories we made on our Mum’s 80th birthday will last a lifetime and we will never forget our stay at Dumcrieff house. Bedrooms & bathrooms are all unique and a good size, dining room perfect for our large party. Would stay again without any hesitation.
Great place for large groups. Beautiful surroundings, with river running nearby. Rooms are lovely, large and feel luxurious.
We had a two night stay for a henny weekend. We found the house very clean and the size of the house perfect for our 18 guests. Dumcrieff House is in a wonderful setting which was all the more enjoyable for us as the weather was beautiful. The bedrooms were large and the beds very comfortable and made up with lovely linen. The towels were also luxurious. We had the butler service for the Saturday which was great .... saved us doing all the washing and tidying up. We also had a chef come in on the Sat evening to cook dinner which everyone enjoyed. All in all it was a great weekend.
House is stunning as are the rooms. Tranquil location in a lovely part of the country beside Moffat Water and within easy reach of the town. Butler and chef enhanced our weekend beyond all expectations. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful short stay at Dumcrieff House to celebrate a family birthday. 13 guests ranging in age from 7 to 76. The house is absolutely beautiful in a tranquil spot just outside Moffat. Kitted out with everything you could possibly need including a snooker table, table football, piano and plenty of DVDs. Wood burners gave a real cosy feel. We are already trying to find time for a repeat visit. Definitely recommend this house.
Stayed here over NYE following our wedding and was the perfect setting. A stay that will live long in our memory. I could go into detail but just look at the pictures which probably don't do it justice!
We loved our stay in Dumcrieff House. It is a perfect place for a large group of family and friends to be together with plenty of space for all. The rooms are large and the beds / bedding are top quality which always makes for a good stay. Everything was immaculately clean and well thought out. Thank you.
We booked Dumcrieff House for a surprise 70th Birthday weekend for my Dad. He was blown away as were we all by the house and it's surroundings. The kitchen was very well equipped, every bedroom was gorgeous and the beds all very comfortable. There was so much to entertain ourselves with..A full sized snooker table, a games room, a massive dining room and cosy sitting rooms with wood-burning stoves all made the perfect family getaway...just wish we could have stayed longer! Will definitely book again.
Superb house with lots of character and space for different activities. Suited our group perfectly!
Overall very impressed with the property and surrounding area. Philip was extremely helpful. The stock of kitchen utensils was superb and catered for our large group.
Perfect location for a special celebration. The house is stunning - luxurious, very well equipped and in a beautiful location. Highly recommended.
Fabulous surrounding for a family fiftieth. Large and comfortable - with everything you would expect from a high end residence. Owner provides loads of local information and accommodating of needs for those traveling from further afield. Highly recommend.
From the early planning to the actual weekend, Philip took so much care of us to ensure we had a family celebration to remember for my parents' diamond anniversary.
The house was perfect and furnished with amazing antiques while retaining a comfortable home feeling. Every room was well equipped though we brought many of our own kitchen equipment with us.
We stayed just after Storm Ali had passed through which downed trees, temporarily blocking the drive before we arrived and bringing down the phone lines meaning no wifi until Sunday afternoon. But Philip dealt with clearing access and kept us posted about the internet and we enjoyed having no distractions.
We booked a butler for one day and he was fantastic. Duncan quietly kept everything running smoothly and having someone to deal with washing dishes and glasses was well worth it so we could relax after meals. There was plenty storage in the kitchen and pantry, necessary as we chose to bring everything for all meals and drinks with us for the long weekend. There is a small co-op and a range of individual shops in Moffat or a 30 min drive to Dumfries where you can find a range of larger supermarkets and specialist food shops to choose from.
We enjoyed walks around the grounds and along the Southern Upland Way which passes near the estate and watched deer on the front lawn in the evening. Due to the earlier weather we couldn't play croquet and the fallen trees stopped games on the lower lawn but the billiards, table football and air hockey provided plenty of entertainment in the evenings after dinner. There are plenty TVs around the house with Sky but we never switched them on.
The location is ideal, close to the motorway but far enough not to hear or see traffic. This house is made for family celebrations or get-togethers and we will certainly consider staying here again.
Wonderful stay. Philip and his partner met us at the house and gave us the tour, including how to operate all the modern kitchen appliances.
Rooms are beautiful, with comfy beds and fluffy towels provided.
Couldn't recommend it more.
Family gathering of 18 people of all ages to celebrate a Birthday. Good time had by one and all, especially the 'party night' when private chef prepared a very special meal and cleared up after. Good location, with lots to do at and around the locality. Thoroughly recommended.
Really great two nights to celebrate my 50th Birthday. The house has everything you require, plenty of utensils etc, and only 30 min walk into Moffat. Lovely and perfect place to spend some time with friends and family.
Our stay at Dumcrieff House revolved around our wedding and allowed us to invite for a weekend stay a group of our friends and family. The accommodation was perfect in every way. The bedrooms were all beautifully decorated and very clean, the living areas offered us the opportunity to entertain our guests in an environment that was very well furnished and very comfortable. The grounds were a picture enabling us to enjoy the good weather and have some great photo opportunities. The owner, Philip, and his wife Demetra have been extraordinarily supportive to ourselves in planning our special weekend and helped by finding us a number of excellent service providers (chef, butler, transport and entertainers, florist etc) that added enormously to our weekend. We would not hesitate in recommending Dumcrieff House to anyone who is looking for an exceptional property to stay in and hold a special event with a group of friends and family. Philip and Demetra own a truly beautiful property and anytime you spend here will be a truly amazing experience, ours was and so much of it is down to the owners and this fantastic house................you will have no regrets in staying here!
Great house, gorgeous setting, plenty of room, luxury towels and bed linen, comfortable beds and beautifully prepared for our visit . A perfect property for any special occasion.
We had a great family get together to celebrate a 50th birthday. The venue was fantastic accommodating us brilliantly in the 7 huge double and 2 twin rooms. We also booked the personal chef who was a great character and the food was outstanding. We would thoroughly recommend Dumcrieff House to anyone looking for wonderful accommodation and surroundings.
We stayed at Dumcrieff for my husband’s 40th Birthday celebrations. The house was absolutely lovely and I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a celebratory getaway with family & friends. It had everything we could need and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in this impressive home. Wish we could have stayed longer. Thank you Philip for all your help with the booking and welcome gifts!
An absolutely fabulous weekend was had with 3 generations of the family all equally wowed by the surroundings. The property managed to be both grand in size but cosy in feel. The kitchen was well equipped with sufficient fridge space to house the food mountain we brought with us. The level of cleanliness was exceptional throughout and the towels and linen were of a high standard. The pictures don't really do the space justice, each bedroom is huge and offered amazing views over the trees in their autumnal glory. The bench outside was used for afternoon tea with the noise of the river in the background adding to the calming nature of the place. The owner Philip was very helpful with the pre-party arrangements putting us in touch with local kennels, chefs and cleaners. All in all a brilliant weekend and a fabulous property for a party.
Having booked Dumcrieff House for my sisters hen do, this place and Philip surpassed all expectations ! Philip was excellent at communicating throughout my booking and on arrival, making us feel welcome and explaining everything thoroughly. Now onto the house, words cannot describe how impressive it is! All our guests could not believe the size and quality of all the rooms in the house. We also booked the outdoor activities and the chef, both services I would highly recommend. Overall this place is a total one off, and I can’t wait to go back again in the future!
Perfect location for a family get together over Christmas. The house is beautiful with large rooms, all furnished to a high standard. The house combines luxury with the welcoming feel of a family home. We all loved our stay, plenty of room for everyone and loads for all generations to do. Gorgeous walks from the door, close to spectacular scenic hikes, lovely garden, lots of games, a DVD library, snooker table..... Philip was really helpful and responsive. Fabulous week in this wonderful house, thoroughly recommend.
We were a large group of school friends, staying at Dumcrieff House for our annual reunion. We had an excellent time at the House. It is impressive in stature, with a very high standard of internal furnishing. Philip, the owner, was always very quick to reply to my messages. Couldn't have asked for more.
From start to finish we had a fantastic 4 day stay at Dumcrieff House. Philip was an incredible host, supporting us with our holiday planning and making introductions to local experts to help us with various activities we were looking for over the weekend, from fly fishing lessons on the Annan to a whisky tasting at the property. We were delayed on arrival due to traffic so Philip and his wife went to the property to let in our grocery deliveries and packed everything away for us so all was in order when we arrived - such incredible service and warm hospitality! We had 17 staying but there is so much room you always had your own space. The facilities are fantastic and we had everything we needed. What better way to spend a Summer evening in Scotland than barbecuing local angus steaks outside the snooker room on the Dumcrieff House terrace, surrounded by woods and pasture with the River Annan running by. Many thanks again Philip for your hospitality, I can't recommend Dumcrieff House enough.
Great house for my 50th birthday & 16 close friends. Phillip was v helpful throughout. Highly recommended!
What a fantastic venue for our friend Gill's Hen Weekend. Philip and Demetra were there to meet us and were generous and gracious. The house itself is fabulous with beautiful bedrooms and a very well appointed kitchen. We wanted for nothing. We were very lucky with the weather too and made the most of the grounds for our 'games' on Saturday. I would highly recommend Dumcrieff Mansion to all.
This venue is just amazing. I only wish I could give it 10 stars. It is huge, the rooms are large and well decorated and the bathrooms are fully modernised and luxurious. Everything you need is there and in our case that included the weather which meant we could enjoy the beautiful outside spaces. I would highly recommend.
We are a group of 8 couples approaching retirement age. We have stayed at Drumcrieff mansion for a long weekend for the last 5 years. Wonderful house with everything you need for a fabulous break. The house is immaculate and the owners make sure there is everything you need for a wonderful break with family and friends. We will be returning again in 2018 for our 6th visit can,t wait xx
We have been visiting this amazing house for 5 years now.As a party of 16 this year was no exception, the views from the absolutely fabulous bedrooms and living rooms take your breath away. The owners are lovely people and make you feel so welcome. The little town of Moffat is on your doorstep and Dumfries is just a short drive away, not that you need to leave this beautiful home at all.Do yourself a favour and pay this hidden treasure a visit I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. We cannot wait to return .
This is just the most wonderful House and Location for a Family and Friends celebration or get together. My wife's 70th Birthday was celebrated in style. Fourposter Beds, lavish Bathroom, spacious Lounges with wood burning stoves, even a mini Grand Piano.
The Dining room, seating 18 and the Snooker room were well used as was the smaller games room, with Table Football and Air hockey, by the children small and large.
I must mention Ian and Ester Murray, the Butler and Chef, who were superb and made the whole Easter long weekend go without a hitch. Ester must write a Cookery Book!
The super grounds, alongside the River make an ideal landing site for a Helicopter, trips in which we all enjoyed. Lifetime Memories for all the young children especially.
Thank you again Philip for allowing your super Home to be used by us all.
Barry and Sue.
We loved Dumcrieff house and from the moment we walked through the door with Philip and his wife we knew we would have a great weekend. The information they shared about the house and it's amenities was great! The house is huge and all 18 of us felt so relaxed and comfortable during our weekend stay with lots of space for everyone to be together and also space to do your own thing. The house had everything we needed and we made great use of all the areas relaxing in the main room and sitting room, having a good chat in the busy kitchen, enjoying afternoon tea and an Italian meal in the dining room and playing snooker, pool and air hokey in the games rooms. The bedrooms and bathrooms were lovely and beds were so comfortable. We had a lovely walk in the grounds. We loved our stay for our all girl's 40th weekend celebration and hope to return again!
We have just spent THE MOST enjoyable, memorable and luxurious weekend of our lives. We booked Dumcrieff House to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday with our close friends and family - our expectations of the weekend were surpassed in every way possible. Philip and Ian helped with planning the weekend in great detail and helped me to make this such a wonderful experience for my wife. The house, food, rooms, welcome, surroundings, planning and the warmth and support of Ian and his wife - nothing could have been better or improved, everything was just perfect. Thank you also to everyone who came, what a wonderful weekend and amazing memories to cherish. No hesitation in rating this wonderful house and our stay as excellent.
Had a fantastic weekend at Dumcreif House. Setting and location lovely, accommodation and amenities excellent. Just a quick walk into Moffat as well. Definitely recommended.
I booked Dumcrieff for a 50th bday celebrations. The booking process (through Owners direct site )was easy -but for me it was the communications with Philip who answered all my queries and doubts in detail through email or phone that was the highlight. We were a mix of adults, teenagers and a couple of toddlers and spent a weekend there
Full compliments to Philip and Dematra who make the house what it is now
The house is awe inspiring and has a pleasing mix of the antique and the modern-such that you feel at home and not out of place. The beds and bedrooms are very spacious luxurious and very comfortable-the bathrooms and kitchen have all the mod cons and are fully kitted out for use( 2 refrigerators , 2 dishwashers an Aga that is on always) . The rooms remain warm and the shower water pressure is strong . Most bathrooms have dual access -internally from the bedrooms and from the corridor The kids had no qualms about the wifi and phone coverage was fine in the ground floor.-but the games and billiards rooms and the outdoor space kept them away from their gizmos
The grounds and surroundings are a delight to explore We were there in the 1st weekend of October and were expecting wet cold conditions -and instead were awarded the most glorious sunshine with temp of 16 degrees - long walk followed by a picnic lunch on the lawns. Moffat is a short drive away for any necessities
I prearranged with Philip and got an external caterer for the bday dinner
I had also arranged a housekeeper's services through Philip -unfortunately she became indisposed but then Dematra stepped in
A beautiful place. We left with fantastic memories of Dumcrieff and hope that we can return sometime
I booked Dumcrieff for my friend's hen party and if you're looking for sophistication and beautiful scenery, this house could not be better.
On arrival the house was spotless and we were given a comprehensive tour by Philip and his wife. They also left us several complimentary bottles of prosecco and biscuits which we thoroughly enjoyed!
The communal areas such as the drawing room and dining room have stunning views and are the perfect setting for social gatherings. The grounds of the house are incredible if you enjoy walks and nature.
In terms of location, the house is approximately a 4 minute drive from Moffat which was handy for us as we had booked Brodies for afternoon tea.
Everything in the house was luxurious from the showers and complimentary toiletries to the decor and bedding. It was so lovely to stay there and we are all enthusiastic about returning one day!
There were 14 of us staying overnight and despite this, the place still felt huge!
Another feature to mention is the bbq...we made great use of this and despite the rain, we were still able to enjoy the wonderful outdoor space. Again bbq fuel was provided so you didn't have to worry about bringing anything.
The house itself was really well kitted out with TVs in every room, DVD players, wifi, beautiful bed linen and all the kitchen essentials you could think of.
I could not recommend this place highly enough for a group gathering. Philip and his wife bend over backwards to accommodate your needs and make it very easy to contact them if you need to.
I very much look forward to a return visit.
15 hens had a fabulous weekend at Dumcrieff House. The setting was perfect, despite the rain. Philip was on call to answer any questions should we need and was flexible with the check out arrangements. There is lots of space in the house so room to escape if you need to! The lounge is a super size and a smaller one with a television should you wish to use it. The games rooms are great too with lots of board games to choose from. I'd definitely consider going back for another weekend. Thank you Philip!
